1. Confirm what the display can show
Ask what the teacher was trying to display and whether the problem began after a change. A visible “No signal” message or on-screen menu shows that the display can produce at least that image. It does not prove the whole video path works.
If there is no power or there are signs of damage, stop the ordinary display checks and use the responsible support route. Leave ceiling-mounted equipment and electrical work to the authorised team.
2. Match the input to the connected port
Follow the visible laptop connection to its labelled wall plate, adapter or display input. Check that the display is set to the intended HDMI, DisplayPort or other input. A cable on HDMI 1 will not supply the picture selected from HDMI 2.
Use the room’s documented arrangement if it includes an AV controller or switching system. Record the current selection before making an agreed change.
3. Check the laptop’s display output
On Windows, press Windows key + P and select the mode needed for the lesson, such as Duplicate or Extend. With Extend, the presentation may need to be moved to the other display. On a Mac, review the connected display in System Settings → Displays and the intended mirroring or arrangement.
Seeing a picture does not establish that touch or audio works. Check those separately if they are part of the teaching task.
4. Make one useful comparison
- With permission, reseat an accessible, undamaged connection.
- If available, compare one known working cable or adapter of the correct type.
- Try an authorised known working laptop on the same room connection, or compare the original laptop with an approved working display.
- Record which combination works. Return anything borrowed to its normal arrangement.
A successful comparison narrows the fault. Replacing the laptop, adapter and cable at once makes it harder to know what helped.
Fictional worked example
The selected input was the difference.
A teacher’s laptop works normally, but the display says “No signal”. The labelled connection enters HDMI 1; the display menu shows HDMI 2. With the teacher’s agreement, the technician selects HDMI 1, then confirms the intended presentation and its audio work.
The record states the observation, the single change, the verification and the next improvement: updating the room’s input label. It does not claim that every “No signal” fault has the same cause.
5. Verify the actual lesson task
Ask the teacher to display the intended material, check readable text and confirm any required audio or interaction. If unresolved, record the room, exact message, selected input, laptop and adapter references, successful comparisons and agreed teaching alternative.
